What makes athletes great
This article took ages. Aside from the difficulties of finding the athletes and covering their entire athletic journeys, the most difficult part of this article was the formatting using the photos. Through countless hours of experimentation, I was finally able to perfect the article, and am happy with the outcome.
Scots run down the Dons in the last inning
This was by far my favorite article to write. The conditions were perfect for clear photos, which allowed me to capture some of the best pictures of my photography career. I also really enjoyed playing around with the aperture for the feature photo. In addition, the game had an exciting twist at the end, making the article more of an interesting read.
Exploring the correlation between academics and athletics
This article had a lot of ups and downs and was overall very difficult to publish. My first issue was that I had written an opinion article very similar to this, just a few weeks prior. This made it difficult to decipher between the two ideas. In addition, it was hard for me to come up with a photo for the article, and I ultimately came up quite short. However, we were still able to publish the article and bring a Carlmont PE coach's story to life.
Opinion: Parents should raise their children as athletes
Opinion writing is one of the things I struggle most with today. This article was no different. I wanted to stick with my sports writing groove but wanted to also bring an opinion that I had felt for a long time. I am glad I was able to write an article like this to add to my capabilities.
Unexpected tie leaves Battle of Belmont rivalry unfinished
This was one of my most exciting articles yet. Many of my friends were playing in the game, and I had been anticipating the Battle of the Belmont game for weeks. Also, I had finally gotten the groove of sports writing and was excited to try out a new camera in preferable conditions. I really liked the way I covered the game in chronological order, adding a more game-like feel. This article was another one of my favorites.
Where the money goes
This article was my first ever feature writing. We wanted to address the many questions circulating in our school about the high ticket prices at school events, especially in athletics. This was definitely a difficult article to write, as it was longer than we were used to. Nonetheless, this article was another great milestone in my journalism journey.
Scots secure a win against the Bears in the final minutes
This article was a milestone for me because it was my first solo article. The photos in this article were very fun, as I was experimenting with a new camera. Finding a balance for the camera settings was difficult due to the darkness, and looking back I would have done things very differently photography-wise. However, the article itself was well written and I was definitely proud to produce my first solo article.
This was definitely one of my favorite articles because the story was so deep. I had known this coach for many years, and being able to tell his story was quite significant to me. Being able to positively recount the hardships in his life was definitely a challenge, but it made for a great article.
Carlmont boys soccer returns for an exciting new season
Even though this was my second article, it felt foreign. This was due to a combination of a few reasons, but the main ones were that we didn't have any of our own pictures to use and because it was my first article not covering a game. However, we were able to produce a decent article introducing the soccer season.
Bears grab a tight win over the Scots
This was my first article ever written, and I had many struggles to overcome. First, the photos in the gym were quite bad, as the lighting was difficult to work with. In addition, the game was very close and went to 5 sets, making it difficult to pack the entire game into a short article. However, a decent article turned out, and I am proud to call it my first.
